What is Relaxation?
Updated: May 19
I don't know about you, but I struggle with RELAXING. I always feel as though I have to be doing something productive. This past week, however, I had an experience of relaxation and YES at times, I struggled with it, but what I realized is how important it is to slow our worlds down and Just BE!
Relaxation can have many meanings to different people and that is a wonderful thing! At this point in my life, I can think of three experiences where I can feel totally relaxed. #1 is being able to sleep in without an agenda the next day!!! #2 is being able to sleep in, when it is raining...I LOVE Thunderstorms! Lastly, and probably because I owned a Spa for a long time, is being able to schedule a Massage, Body Treatment or Facial. These appointments are wonderful because I have to check out of the world for a few hours to pamper myself and RELAX! So....on a daily basis, I struggle with relaxing! Here is the rest of the story.....
We took a family vacation this past week and It was the most relaxing vacation I have ever taken. Many times on a vacation, we find ourselves on a schedule and we have several adventures and excursions planned throughout the week. This trip was different. We had quality time to talk to our teenagers. We enjoyed dinners with conversation together. We caught up on sleep and just found ourselves thinking about "What we would LIKE to do," versus "What we HAVE to do".
Our lives, like most people our age, are filled with details, rushing from here to there and checking off items on a long to-do list. I found myself, while trying to relax...at times frustrated. That nagging feeling of needing to "DO" and "Accomplish Something" was great. THEN....
I realized that everything that I had always wanted in my life (from the time I was a young girl)was right in front of me!!! Why would I want to RUSH through this experience. The loves of my life and the simplest things are TREASURES to me. Our week consisted of working out as a family, riding bikes together, long walks, Sushi, many delicious dinners, early bedtimes and lazy mornings. Watching my "almost grown" children sleep......was priceless. This family vacation will become one of our family favorites.
So Now What? Escape to the park, go for a hike in the woods, make dinners together, shut off the technology, float on a raft and lay in the grass to watch the clouds move! I guess we need to coral our loved ones, keep it simple and just be in a space with them to say, "Be Where YOU are At."
Until Next Week :)
